Renewal

By Abigail Houseman

Remark and rejoice, for the world has been renewed.

New-born, we emerge blinking in the sun, gathering at the source of shelter and sustenance to toast the newcome dawn.  In the depths of the winter cold, the knowledge of this return is crackling, spotty newsreel, black-and-white, a herald from a different age.  Colour seeps in slowly, saturates the background first before meandering to the fore, and sound, muffled by snow, is uncovered to become sharp once more.

Witness, down the laneway, as newt-green grass, dewy from fresh rainfall, knits to sinew over the earth, while hedgerows weave a tapestry in ode to Demeter’s love. As you walk, invisible, bright bird song rings out anew, their chimes breathing melodious life into the air to propel the breeze.

Ahead, the apple tree stands a newel post from which this burst of life spirals forth, up, out, away, its Newtonian fruit just starting to form, a theory still a hypothesis.

Rest here and bask, as the new season unfurls its tendrils towards the oncoming sun. Rest here now, and rejoice again, for the beginning of it all.
