mustard

By Lauren K. Nixon
sharp-tongued
on the edge of the plate on Sundays
next to fat slices of roast beef

the streak of vivid yellow on the hills and clifftops

as I wade through a sea of it
up to my shoulders
pollen dusting my clothes in July heat

the colour of it flavours my memory

at the heart of the lupin
water pools like gems.
