Flow/Fowl

By Marcus Yeatman-Crouch
Follow the flow countercurrent
past crows that prowl the shingles
                       oil spills on suntouched plumage
wet hound stench on the wind
Off the path into the mulch
            petrichor clinging to sodden trunks
                       leeching mud curses white trainers
of metro wanderers seeking the primaeval
Shaded soil to sunlit sand
            pebble skipping on bubbling waters
the sheltered bay has been home to others
footprints replace them and the secret passes on
Peace disturbed by a babble of beaks
promised crumbs draw waterfowl to shore
                       shimmering iridescence squabbling for spoils
they slip away seamless when we follow the stream home

Marcus is a Creative Writing graduate from Cardiff University. Having recently completed his studies he has found work in the decidedly uncreative field of insurance; this has however prompted a shift in his writing, from primarily prose to inclusions of shorter pieces of flash fiction and poetry, which he swore he had no interest in throughout his entire degree. He hopes to use his recent expansion of form to engage more with the literary community and publicise his work, with the ambition of publishing a novel in the future.
