Praise

By Eve Chancellor

He fell in
love, the way Tennyson
said he would. Slowly,
at first. Then all
at once. Even though
the other boy
did not love him
back, he still repeated
it to himself
every morning,
in front of the bathroom mirror:
I love, I love, I love.
It was like a prayer.
He did this
every morning, hoping
that his love
would go away.
But, at the same time
that everything –
everything perfect
and beautiful –
would stay this good
forever.
